VALENCE, RUPERT A member of the Sixth Form and black sheep. Caught poaching on Sir Hilton Popper’s estate, he gives Courtney’s name, and Courtney takes a thrashing for the sake of Valence’s sister. [M 186] He was caught poaching again and expelled. [M 221] He returned disguised as a new boy, and despite getting mixed up with Banks the Bookie through unfortunate circumstances, he wins back the Head’s respect and is allowed to return. [M 224] He later forges a cheque to try and pay a gambling debt to Jerry Hawke, but is caught in the Cross Keys during a bombing raid. Courtney rescues him from the flames, but dies from the burns. Valence leaves, presumably to enlist. [M 520 by JNP] Greyfriars’ Gallery [M 530]

VALENCE, VIOLET Sister to Rupert, she is concerned for his welfare [cf. Marjorie and Peter Hazeldene, Phyllis and Archie Howell, & Flip and Flap Derwent], and in love with Courtney. She asks Courtney to intervene to help her brother on a number of occasions [M 186, 221 and 224]. Shortly after Courtney dies as a result of injuries sustained in rescuing Valence from the Cross Keys after a bombing raid, she too dies, from illness and a broken heart. [M 520 by JNP]

VALENTINE, JIM [JAMES] aka DICK THE PENMAN A temporary member of the Remove form [M1297-1307].

VALIANT, THE An IPC comic of the 1960’s and 1970’s which carried a Billy Bunter comic strip, a mixture of Frank Minnitt and Reg Parlett strips reprinted from Knockout, and new strips drawn by Reg Parlett.

VAN DUCK, PUTTNAM A temporary member of the Remove form [M 1471-1478 cf. Fish in M 1161-1165].

VANE, CYRIL A member of the Remove form, arriving in M 191 and soon fading into the background, he is Bob Cherry’s cousin.

VANE, HERBERT An inventor, who hid his plans in a Greyfriars’ guy to prevent their theft. [M 717 by NWS]

VANE, PAUL Brother to Herbert, and also an inventor. [M 717 by NWS]

VASELINE An early nickname for Peter Hazeldene, due to his vacillating nature.

VAVASOUR, ADOLPHUS THEODORE Initially the captain of the Highcliffe Fourth form, he later became one of the leading lights of Ponsonby’s Co. at Highcliffe before Courtenay arrived, before fading into the background. Greyfriars’ Gallery [M 536]

VERNEY, JACK Having run away from school, he meets Archie Drake whilst at the cinema. Drake confides his lack of sporting prowess and Verney agrees to take his place at Greyfriars, to win Drake some sporting laurels. Having beaten Cherry in a fight, and won an athletics race, he is exposed when Mr Drake turns up to watch a footer match. Verney later rescues Mr Drake from the Sark; and when Wharton shows him an ad. in the Times asking him to come home all ends well. [M 527 of 1918 by GRS]

VERNON, BERTIE A temporary member of the Remove form, he is the Bounder’s cousin and double [M 1631-1642].

VERNON, CAPTAIN Bertie Vernon’s father.

VERNON, JACK aka CAPTAIN DONOVAN. Actually Herbert Russell, he posed as a Greyfriars’ Old Boy. [M 716 by GRS]

VERNON-SMITH, HERBERT TUDOR aka THE BOUNDER A member of the Remove form. VERNON-SMITH, MR. He tested Redwing’s friendship with Smithy when he pretended to lose all his money. [M 563 cf. Mauleverer and his uncle in M 184] Greyfriars’ Gallery [M 563]

VILLEFORT A member of the group of French schoolboys, who visited Greyfriars in the company of Henri Lerouge, Meunier’s cousin. [M 19-20]

VINEY, MR Solicitor to Sir Reginald Brooke. Scaife came down to Greyfriars pretending to be Mr Viney’s representative so he could kidnap Vivian, and prevent him claiming Pengarth. Unfortunately, he kidnapped Bunter by mistake, who was running an errand in Sir Jimmy’s place. [M 809]

VIVIAN, SIR BRANDON A hard-drinking baronet, and Sir Jimmy Vivian’s closest relative. After he died in a boating accident off Pengarth, the property was placed in Chancery and left in charge of Keeley, his manservant, until Sir Jimmy came of an age to inherit. [M 811]

VIVIAN, FRANCIS Jimmy Vivian’s cousin, an explorer who invented “monkey gland extract” energy pills. He left some behind when he visited Jimmy at Greyfriars, and Mauly accidentally took one and astounded the Remove with his sudden energy. [M 718 by GRS]

VIVIAN, SIR JIMMY [JAMES] A member of the Remove form arriving in M 471, and a cousin to Lord Mauleverer. Greyfriars’ Gallery [M 529], Magnet Portrait Gallery [M 937], Greyfriars’ Interviews [M 1487], Greyfriars’ Guide [M 1599]

VON LIMBURG, FRANZ A temporary member of the Remove form [M 356 cf. Von Rattenstein in M 422-423, 433].

VON RATTENSTEIN, RUPPRECHT A temporary member of the Remove form, arriving in M 422 and being expelled in M 433.
